[Qgis-user] Co-ordinates

Well, a more direct response:

1. If you have the CSV files make sure they are comma separated and in a
decimal degree format (not grades, minutes, seconds or words and letters
like "grades" or "W", "E", etc.), you'll need things like "1,90.3425,
-100.0000".

2. You click in the "Add CSV layer" icon (in QGIS 1.8 is a big blue icon
with commas, in 1.9 is a big comma icon).

3. You upload your CSV file and check the separator box you used and
accept, then make sure X and Y correspond with longitude and latitude.

4. This is not a shapefile yet, these are, in ESRI's slang, "events". To
save these "events" as shapefiles use right click on layer and "Save As..."

5. I f you need to specify data types I would highly recommend to use
"Table Manager" addon.
