The preferrend procedure is to keep on upgrading the projects from one
version to the next. Ensuring retrocompatibility for -n versions is a
major work, and nobody has come out to do it, or sponsor it.
In your case, most probably is the switch from old to new symbology
that is causing the issue.
I do not see another way than rebuilding the styles with the new
symbology (far more powerful, I'm sure you'll enjoy it).
