[Qgis-user] Keep both qgis2.18 and qgis3.0.2 on Debian machine?

Would not have been better releasing qgis3 as if it were a different package?
As an alternative to the virtual machine, is not possible to keep
qgis2.18 and qgsi3 if
I compile qgis3 myself? If this is possible, any directions on how to do it?
