[Qgis-user] Live Mapping with QGIS on Toughbook

Some more information might be needed. Is it possible your QGIS data resides in a server and not on your local machine? Perhaps the Toughbook knows where it is, but can't display the underlying map layers because it can't connect to the server? That would also explain why it works when you are in wifi service.

I would start by testing in a wide open field. Is the problem with the GPS in the laptop or with the connection with QGIS? If it’s the later, explain what you are doing and what versions of QGIS using. If you only get a position with the wifi, maybe you don’t have an actual GPS chip. Look at the computer specs. Some tablettes (iPods also) and rare phone only use wifi for positioning and do not use an actual GPS chip. Make sure you are not in airplane mode with antenna’s turned off.

I have been trying to use QGIS for live mapping on my Panasonic Toughbook Cf19 MK7 but I cannot get the GPS to connect when in the field. The software on the Toughbook shows it is picking up satellites so I am confident it isn’t the hardware. When I try to connect it occasionally picks up my location if I have wi-fi but without it never does.

Any ideas what might be going wrong?
