Why are you using "Add polygon feature" when your goal appears to be adding points?
Sorry, I now realised that I wrote “polygon feature”. I actually use “Add point feature”

What is the geometry of your shapefile layer?  If you intend to have points in it, then the geometry should be "point".
The geometry is Point.
