[Qgis-user] when I try to look at the properties of a layer which did not load, qgis crashes

The file for the layer that is not recognized appears to not be in a 
proper format, but that should not crash qgis.

gdalinfo manhole_ground.las
ERROR 4: `manhole_ground.las' not recognized as being in a supported 
file format.
gdalinfo failed - unable to open 'manhole_ground.las'.

file manhole_ground.las
manhole_ground.las: LIDAR point data records, version 1.3, SYSID 
WhiteboxTools by John Lindsay   WhiteboxTools  \011\001\345\007\353, 
Generating Software WhiteboxTools          \011\001\345\007\353
