Dear Sir,
I am having a problem in opening in my QGIS (ver. 3.28.15) some AVHRR
(Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) satellite data of my study area
in Thar Desert from the LAC coverages (Local Area Coverage, at 1 km pixel,
and in 4 different spectral wavelength bands), which I downloaded from
NOAA-CLASS (Comprehensive Large Area-Data Stewardship System) website.
A typical data for download reads like:
"NSS.LHRR.NF.D88091.S1056.E1107.B1699899.GC",
each of which covers ~59-60 Mb space to encapsulate data in 2 optical
wavelength
bands (for vegetation studies, etc.), and 2 thermal infrared bands (for
emissivity studies). Each data strip also includes few other types (e.g.,
FRAC: Full Resolution Area Coverage at 1 km), but those are not of my
current interest. The data is provided in World Sinusoidal Projection. I
think that the data is in old raw binary format.
Only a very few data could be opened automatically by QGIS when the data
was selected in the GDAL toolbox (e.g., "
NSS.LHRR.NA.D82095.S0305.E0316.B1440000.GC"), and I could convert those
data into geotiff format for further analysis. Most data that I downloaded
is not read by GDAL.
Since the daily AVHRR data from 1982 onwards is very exciting and useful
for my research in time series analysis of changes in land conditions over
time, I wanted to download the daily data of March to June for all the
years from 1982 to 2010, and then find their trends with other data series
like MODIS 1km surface reflectance data.
The NOAA-CLASS website is an old one, and their "Help" site (
class.help at noaa.gov) just does not respond to any request for help in
reading or converting their data. An auto-reply informs every time that the
question was sent to an "Expert" who would respond (a "Ticket" is issued),
but that is the end of communication from them. The website also mentions
an old and outdated programme called "Satpy", but it could not be found.
Considering the resources of NASA & NOAA, and the prompt replies that I
used to get on my queries to them during the last four decades or more,
this was very surprising and sad.
Frustrated by the efforts so far, I am constrained now to know from the
vast QGIS Community if any one can teach me as to how best the NOAA-CLASS
data could be converted to geotiff format.
I must confess that I am NOT a computer hardware or software specialist by
any stretch of imagination. I can only analyse the digital satellite data
if these can be converted to geotiff (.tif) and idrisi (.rst) formats using
the standard RS-GIS tools.
