I honestly believe that path is shut. KDAB were asked but were unwilling to
explore this because they also saw it as something which is high risk and
extremely unlikely to be accepted in Qt.

I still strongly believe this is the only **realistic** way forward. It's
far from ideal (and not the path I would ever want to go for something like
this), but the only alternative is just dropping this functionality from
qgis ☹️
