[OSGeo-Edu] Re: GIS for elementary and secondary schools

Hi Paul,

I think this a great proposal! On the side, I am working with a HS science teacher on visually displaying data that he is collecting on coyote movements. His HS students help him with his research but due to a lack of time, he nor I have been unable to find an easy way to integrate GIS into the classroom and have the kids themselves map the data that they collected. I've only just started checking out opensource mapping programs. He's very interested in finding a cheap program that he can use in the classroom that kids can use too.
I am a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts and have access to ArcGIS. At the moment, I've been mapping his coyotes and then send him images of the new plots. I haven't looked at Google Earth at all simply due to a lack of time to spend on it. Have you, or anyone else played with it enough to recommend it as a functionally reliable tool to import UTM points and view the plots?

  Thanks and good luck!

Hi all,

I am looking at developing material to introduce GIS and Mapping for
Students in Elementary and Secondary schools. One of the things I have
noticed in the material that has been developed is that it is geared more
for university and college students. One of the areas that needs to be
developed is teaching materials for elementary and secondary school
teachers. In the future there is going to be a lack of people in the GIS
community with the proper background in mapping and GIS. If we introduce
these concepts at an earlier age then a greater interest in this technology
will develop in later years. If anyone has any suggestions or comments
please speak up.

Paul,

although my focus is graduate level education I have done some work
with 4th graders few years ago.
We have prepared some on-line material for them to work with and the
teachers could then go back
and use the material more extensively in the class later. Here is the
web site with some of the material
that we have used (this was before Google earth was launched so now
so much more is available!)

http://skagit.meas.ncsu.edu/~helena/classwork/kidswebgis.html

Kids just loved it and we always had a great time, so I would start
building the material using the internet
resources - kids are so used to work with browser that they can
figure out and explore a lot all by themselves.
The biggest problem is really to find a good sequence of material
that will allow teaching the material
in a systematic and interesting way,

Helena

Here is a project we have been working on:

Minnesota Interactive Internet Mapping (MIIM):
Open Source Web Mapping in K-16 Education

MIIM is a web-based application that introduces K-12 and post-secondary
students to principles of geography and GIS. MIIM makes use of several
open-source projects, including Mapbender, MapServer, and PostgreSQL.

You can look at our project site at
http://maps.umn.edu. We have been working with several elementary schools
and have held sessions where kids come to our campus for a mini lesson on
GIS, a visit to the map library, and GeoWall (3D map projection).

We have a link on the site to other web mapping sites related to teaching
K-12 students.

Let me know if I can provide further information about the work we are
doing.

Len Kne
