Adding data to a database table published in GeoNode is doable already.
What is missing is the ability to register an existing table directly
rathen than having to through the shapefile upload.
I believe there was work done in WorldMap (a downstream project) to create
tables directly from GeoNode but this would be a GUI process anyway.

Once you create a layer in GeoServer.

This would need to be implemented but I would rather go towards and
approach when "something" tells GeoNode that a certain layer has been
updated.
