Dear Dimitris & all,
you are making a good point in asking "what's different now, will it run better this time". Indeed, OSGeo and us earlier disagreed on governance issues. After a 6 years process in the end the showstopper was about my veto rights in the steering committee, ie: "design by committee" vs "design by competence" as we see it: while we always have been open to discussion and accepting advice from anybody we would not allow majority voting on strategies, irrespective of competence.
Partly based on this dispute (I believe) OSGeo decided to introduce OSGeo Community projects which relax corresponding rules. This way a bridge was built to incorporate further projects with more variety in their governance. Personally, I feel this is a great move forward towards a more inclusive view, accepting the plurality and thus allowing more open-source projects to be represented by OSGeo. I always felt that basically we are rowing the same boat, sharing similar ideals to a large extent. This is why we will be happy to join OSGeo under this regime should the vote result in an adoption
my 2 cents,
Peter
