[Mapserver-users] newbie questions

hiya - i'm just getting started with this although
i've been reading the docs looking at the examples and
reading the list archives. i'm using php mapscript.
are there any easy to read tutorials, step by step
sort that explain a) how i can query a shapefile? i
have figured out how to get info from the file by
clicking on it using templates but i'm having hard
time searching (like with a search box) and coming
back with results. b) how to do the reference map
thing. i cannot for the life of me figure that out it
never works properly even though i have the stuff in
the mapfile like in the demos. c) same thing with the
scalebar, i never get one on screen although i have it
defined in the mapfile.
