 I take that back.  Seems I also need the PKG_CONFIG_PATH thing to get it
 to pickup protobuf.  Anyway I have winnie almost ready to start building
 with protobuf.  I'll close this ticket once I have her setup and open
 another for investigating the configure headaches.
