 I suggest the following:

 1. Make sure internal transformation does not change validity. I think
 this should be possible for valid input.
 2. Check for input validity by default but expose an option to turn it
 off. With a disclaimer.

 I don't think removing transformation will be useful for most users but
 I'll consider if it would also be something that one could opt out with a
 disclaimer.
