Brent,

If you use the avcimport program (part of AVCE00) you can turn an E00
vector coverage into a binary vector coverage.  This can be directly loaded
into PostGIS with OGR.

   http://ogr.maptools.org/

Of course this isn't super convenient, but it does work.
