Adrian,
I'm thinking of Web + GIS all the time. I'm working with a Finnish
Plone shop, MB Concert, and Nuxeo on cartographic objects for Zope
which use the University of Minnesota MapServer rather than Google
Maps. Between this Zope software and MapServer is a Python package that
might be useful with Django. I'm calling it Python Cartographic Library
because I have no knack for names, and intend it to be the "GeoTools
for Python". It has a GeoTools-ish feature store abstraction for
shapefiles and such using OGR, and I am expanding towards PostGIS and
WFS.
The Zope work is aimed at integrating maps with these content
management systems. We are tagging content with geometries so that site
users can use a map to display or search for local content.
cheers,
Sean
